Our Philosophy
One day an old man was walking along the beach. It was low tide, and the sand was littered with thousands of stranded starfish that the water had carried in and left behind. The man began walking very carefully so as not to step on any of the beautiful creatures. Since the animals still seemed to be alive, he contemplated picking some of them up and putting them back into the water, where they could resume their lives. The man knew the starfish would die if left them on the beach’s dry sand, but he reasoned that he could not possibly help them all, so he chose to do nothing and continued walking.
Soon after, the man came upon a young girl who was dedicatedly throwing one starfish after another back into the sea. The old man stopped and asked the girl, “What are you doing?”
“I’m saving the starfish,” the girl replied.
“Why waste your time? There are so many. You can’t possibly save them all, so why even bother? It won’t make a difference.”
Undeterred, the girl picked up another starfish, tossed it back into the water,
smiled at the man and said:
“It made a difference to that one.”
Mission Statement
Peluma is no-kill organization based in South Florida, dedicated to re
lieving the suffering of and cruelty to animals.
We are committed to:
- rescuing and placing homeless animals into responsible, safe, and loving homes both here in the U.S. and abroad
- educating the public on the importance of humane and compassionate treatment towards animals
- informing the public about the advantages of animal rescue and spay/neuter
